A beginner's handbook on the art of draping a saree

The saree, a symbol of grace and elegance, is a timeless garment that holds a special place in Indian culture. However, for many, especially beginners, the thought of draping a saree can be daunting.

Fret not! With a little guidance and practice, anyone can master the art of saree draping.

Here's a beginner's handbook to help you navigate through the intricacies of adorning this iconic attire:

  1. Select a saree that complements your body type, occasion, and personal style. Opt for lightweight fabrics like cotton or georgette for ease of draping, especially if you're a beginner.
  2. Before you begin draping, ensure you have all the necessary accessories handy. These include a well-fitted blouse, matching petticoat, safety pins, and a pair of heels.
  3. Begin by tucking one end of the saree into the petticoat at the waist, ensuring it is secured firmly. Make approximately 5-6 pleats and tuck them neatly into the waistband, starting from the right and moving towards the left.

Drape the Pallu

Use safety pins to secure the pleats and pallu in place, ensuring they stay put throughout the day. Be careful not to prick yourself while pinning.

Once you've draped the saree, take a moment to adjust and straighten any loose ends or pleats. Check your reflection in the mirror to ensure everything looks symmetrical and well-balanced.

Above all, wear your saree with confidence and grace. Remember that each drape is unique to the individual, and there's no right or wrong way to wear a saree.

Don't be afraid to experiment with different draping styles and techniques to find what works best for you. Practice draping the saree at home before wearing it for a special occasion to build confidence and familiarity.
